What is Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening is the process of lightening the natural color of teeth by several shades using various methods. This procedure can be safely applied to all patients over the age of 18. It should be noted that teeth whitening is performed on natural teeth; therefore, the color of ceramic or composite-based veneer restorations and fillings on the teeth does not lighten with the teeth whitening procedure.

What are Teeth Whitening Methods?
Before teeth whitening, tartar cleaning and oral hygiene are crucial. Detailed control and examination of gum health are particularly important for these procedures. Gum bleeding, which is the most significant sign of existing gum disease, will cause teeth whitening to fail during the procedure. Therefore, teeth whitening should be performed in a healthy oral environment. Today, two different teeth whitening systems are used. These are:
Home Whitening:
This method involves the patient applying teeth whitening agents at home. It is a more economical but longer procedure compared to the clinical whitening method applied by a physician. To perform this procedure at home, whitening transparent trays are produced by the clinic based on measurements taken from the patient, and whitening gels to be applied into these trays are given to the patient as a set. The patient performs the whitening process by wearing these trays with the gel inside their mouth overnight while sleeping.
Home Whitening:

These gels are activated by a chemical substance, an external halogen light, or a laser. In chemically activated whitening gels, the activating substances are mixed homogeneously outside the mouth, and the mixture is applied to the tooth surfaces. In whitening kits activated by halogen light or laser, halogen light or laser is applied as an activator during the whitening process. This process takes approximately 15-20 minutes.

Laser Teeth Whitening: Is It the Most Effective Method?
Regardless of the method, excellent results can be achieved if high-quality and biocompatible materials are used in teeth whitening systems. Laser whitening gives results in a shorter time, but the whiteness achieved is the same as with other methods. Laser teeth whitening systems have advantages and disadvantages compared to other systems. To briefly mention:
Advantages: The desired result can be achieved in a shorter time. Therefore, the patient experiences a more comfortable process.
Disadvantages: Laser beams' wavelengths can be absorbed on different molecules. The nerves and vessels inside the tooth (pulp) contain a large amount of hemoglobin. The wavelengths of diode and Nd:YAG lasers are absorbed by hemoglobin excessively. Therefore, when used for a long time and with high energy, they can damage the tissue inside the tooth (pulp) and endanger the tooth's vitality. For this reason, we prefer to use Erbium family laser wavelengths in our clinic. For safe and effective laser teeth whitening treatments, the appropriate wavelength must be applied with the correct parameters. Laser teeth whitening systems are slightly more expensive than other systems. This can also be considered a disadvantage. Another disadvantage of teeth whitening is temporary sensitivity in the patient. These sensitivities disappear after a few days with necessary precautions.
